Rustic walnut wood flooring is dark in color and features hints of the original milling marks left behind by the sawmill. Walnut hardwood floors have a straight grain pattern with a coarse texture. Walnut flooring is available in a beautiful array of colors, from the blonde sapwood to the deep coffee brown heartwood and everything in between. With rich undertones and patterns, walnut flooring is a popular choice for both traditional and contemporary interior design styles. Unlike other wood varieties, walnut also tends to naturally lighten over time. Each plank is different from the next due to the unique color variants within each piece.

Walnut is ideal for hardwood flooring, but can be used in multiple ways due to its trusted durability. Rustic walnut can be utilized for your countertops, cabinetry and furniture. Many wood species are rated based on their “side hardness,” which involves a force test that runs perpendicular to the grain. This rating is called the Janka hardness test. Walnut wood has a Janka rating of 1,010, making it softer than hickory, red oak and white oak, but harder than cherry wood.

Part of what makes Elmwood’s walnut flooring materials unique is the source! A majority of walnut trees grow throughout the American Midwest (specifically Indiana, Ohio and Illinois) and Canada. These magnificent trees reach maturity at around 150 years of age and can grow to be 150 feet tall and 8 feet in diameter! Now that’s the kind of trusted strength and durability you want in your hardwood floor investment.
